Call For Applicants Three Day EQUINET Workshop On Participatory Action Research for the pra4equity network, October 4-6 Fountains Hotel Cape Town

The workshop will be held to deepen the discussion on the use of participatory action research in health policy and people centred health systems, including in acting on the social determinants of health. The first day, separately advertised and included in this call, will be open to delegates from all regions globally to foster cross regional exchange, include people from east and southern African countries. In the second and third days the workshop will be open to delegates from east and southern Africa and aims to deepen capacities in the use of participatory action research (PAR) particularly on • Experiences and learning of the pra4equity network in using PAR and future work of the pra4equity network • Knowledge and research paradigms and how they are reflected in the features and process of PAR • Applying the theory and process of PAR in practice: Methods and tools for PAR; issues in and experiences of implementation • Meta-analysis across sites and use of new technologies in PAR • Ethical issues in PAR • Documenting and reporting PAR It will draw on and distribute the Reader on Participatory Action Research in Health system developed by EQUINET with the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research and IDRC Canada and will also draw on other materials developed by EQUINET for participatory methods in health, including on sexual and reproductive health developed with Cordaid. The workshop is targeted at researchers, health workers, academics, people working in state, civil society and non-state organisations, community leaders and workers and others in east and southern Africa who have been using or seek to use participatory action research in improving health and health systems. There are limited places in the workshop. We invite interested organisations and individuals from east and southern Africa to submit an application to participate and to provide the full information shown below. We encourage members of the pra4equity network to apply. The workshop will be held at Fountains Hotel next to the Cape Town International Convention Centre where the GSHSR is being held. (Delegates applying for the workshop do not need to have attended the GSHSR). The registration fee for the day costs of the workshop for the full three days is US$140 and covers teas, lunches and materials. Accommodation and travel costs are additional. (Bed and breakfast at Fountains Hotel for four nights 3-6 October would is approx. $450). EQUINET will sponsor a number of accepted delegates for the registration fee, and if needed for travel and accommodation, based on need. Information requested from applications: Interested applicants should submit  Full name, institution, position in institution and contact address, and applicant email address, phone number and skype address if available  An ‘expression of interest’ of less than one page that outlines o If delegates have implemented participatory action research (PAR), the PAR that they and their institution are doing that relates to health, action on social determinants of health and strengthening people centred health systems, whether they implemented work within the pra4equity network in EQUINET and how they followed up on this, what their own role in this work is, the methods and how it has connected with communities, what the product was and what changes it aimed at producing / has produced. o If delegates have not yet carried out PAR but would want to attend, the area of research they are working in, what their interest is in PAR and the possibilities they have for using PAR  a brief CV  a paragraph of information on the institution that they work in, and  information on whether they are able to meet or need EQUINET sponsorship for each of o the registration fee – YES/NO o the air travel – YES / NO o the accommodation bed and breakfast – YES/NO and for which nights. Accepted delegates will be notified by 4 July on the outcome of their submission.
