The School of Public Health at the University of the Western Cape has an international reputation as a leading research and teaching institution. It provides health and welfare personnel from developing countries with the opportunity to enhance their capacity to build and strengthen the health sector in their countries. Its open learning postgraduate programme, offering multiple entry and exit points, is unique in Southern Africa. Its educational and research activities focus on the implementation of district health systems. Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor The successful candidate will be expected to play a leadership role in our postgraduate short-course programmes, to strengthen our open learning programme through course and materials development, as well as to lead the School?s research and service development programmes together with other senior staff. Mentoring and supervising junior academics is also required. Staff members are also called on to strengthen Public Health in other University departments, usually at undergraduate level. To qualify for this post, you should have the following: * a PhD or equiva-lent qualification in Public Health, Social and Behavioural Sciences or a related field * demonstrated expertise in one of the following programme areas: HIV/AIDS, TB, Maternal and Child Health, Nutrition or Health Management * at least five years? experience in planning, conducting and leading research in public health * a publications record * at least three years? experience in teaching and supervising postgraduate students. Lecturer The successful candidate will be expected to teach in our postgraduate and short-course programmes, to strengthen our open-learning programme through course and materials development and to participate in the School's research and service development programmes. Staff members are at times called on to strengthen Public Health in other University departments, usually at undergraduate level. To qualify for this post, you should have the following: * a Master's degree in Public Health or Social and Behavioural Sciences or a related field, or substantial progress toward obtaining one, and commitment to obtaining a PhD * at least three years' experience in Health Care, Social and Behavioural Sciences or a related field * experience in conducting research or programme development in Public Health or related fields * experience in teaching and supervising postgraduate students, or in distance education will be a strong recommendation.
