Global Health Watch, 2007
The Global Health Watch is an alternative world health report produced every two and a half years. The aim is to critique and assess the state of global health governance and action with a strong equity lens and with an explicit political and economic critique. It is also designed to act as an instrument of accountability by reviewing and discussing the activities, policies and impacts of a variety of key actors and institutions, including WHO, the World Bank and donor governments. Further information on the Global Health Watch can be found on www.ghwatch.org One of the forthcoming chapters in the next Watch will be on the Gates Foundation and we are looking for informants, particularly from low and middle income countries, who have any considered views and observations on the Gates Foundation, particularly with respect to the following thematic areas: - The influence of the Gates Foundation on health policy, including with regards to intellectual property and sexual and reproductive health; - The impact of Gates funded programmes on health and health systems - The accountability and transparency of the Gates Foundation - The pros and cons of philanthropic funding versus public financing - The relationship between the Gates Foundation and other global health institutions such as WHO Given the undeniably huge importance and influence of the Gates Foundation on global health sector, the Global Health Watch feels it is important and necessary to generate discussion and debate about it.
