Oliver Tambo Fellowship (OTF) Programme UCT Graduate School of Business and Faculty of Health Sciences
This well-established Programme was set up in 1996 to train senior health services managers and to advance health systems knowledge, attitudes and management skills. A new Programme is being launched in the latter half of 2007 as a partnership between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Graduate School of Business. The Oliver Tambo Fellowship (OTF) Programme is the only one of its kind in South Africa. The School of Public Health and Family Medicine is one of the five Schools in the Faculty of Health Sciences UCT, and is recognised internationally for its programmes in postgraduate training and applied health research. UCT’s Graduate School of Business (GSB) is regarded as one of South Africa’s premier Business Schools. Its MBA programme is ranked in the top 100 of the Financial Times of London’s Global rankings. It is accredited by the prestigious European Foundation for Management Development with its EQUIS status. The GSB’s reputation was reinforced by the report of South Africa’s Council on Higher Education in May 2004, which gave it full accreditation for its MBA programmes. The GSB’s Executive Programmes are rated in the top 10 in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit. He/she will engage with senior officials in national, provincial and local Departments of Health to identify skills development needs in high level management training and will lead curricular development reflecting international best practice. He/she will contribute to other postgraduate training and will supervise Masters and PhD dissertations. The incumbent should thus have a PhD and/or a substantial track record of publication in a discipline of relevance to health systems development and/or policy research, as well as experience in training, including curriculum development and development of training materials. The appointee’s track record should include securing funding for and leadership on large research programmes/projects, and regional and international collaboration in developing and undertaking health systems training and research activities. The incumbent will be part of the OTF Programme team and will work closely with the Faculty of Health Sciences. He/she will assist in the development and delivery of the OTF Programme, and will engage closely with the participants in the programme by playing a mentoring and learning support role. As part of the GSB faculty, the appointee will assist with other teaching and research activities in the field of health management with a view to developing this as an area of excellence. There will also be opportunities for incumbent to teach on executive short courses and engage with the wider health industry. The incumbent must have a substantial track record of successful management practice and/or management development.
