AIHR seeks Health Economist and Junior Health Economist

Aurum Institute for Health Research (AIHR) focuses on improving the health of individuals and communities in developing countries using scientifically sound and internationally accepted research and management standards and practices. Current work (biomedical, health systems research, health systems development and economics) focuses on high-burden diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, and topical health policy questions. Health Economist A vacancy for a Health Economist has arisen for the expanding health economics and systems programme, based at the offices of AIHR in Johannesburg. This position will focus on a programme of work evaluating the impact of HIV/AIDS to private businesses in Southern Africa, including the costs and benefits of providing antiretroviral therapy (ART). Responsibilities include: • undertaking health economics research which includes literature reviews, proposal development, data collection, collation, and analysis • writing and presenting regular reports to companies detailing their specific current and projected future costs and benefits of HIV/AIDS • actively participating in the preparation of manuscripts for peer reviewed journals as well as other forms of written and oral dissemination at local and international forums • being actively involved in capacity building activities of the Programme. Requirements: • A post-graduate qualification in health economics or equivalent • at least 4 years’ research experience in a related field including quantitative analysis • computing skills in MS Office, SPSS or other statistical analysis packages • excellent communication, presentation, organisation and administrative skills • the ability to travel both locally and internationally. Junior Health Economist A vacancy for a Junior Health Economist has arisen for the expanding health economics and systems programme, based at the offices of AIHR in Johannesburg. This position will focus on a programme of work evaluating the impact of HIV/AIDS to private businesses in Southern Africa, including the costs and benefits of providing antiretroviral therapy (ART). Responsibilities include: • conducting research in public and private companies • collecting, maintaining and verifying data by visiting company sites throughout Southern Africa • assisting with data analysis and preparation of research/client reports. Requirements: • An undergraduate qualification in economics (preferably health economics) or equivalent • knowledge of data collection and analysis techniques • computing skills in Ms Office, SPSS or another statistical analysis packages • excellent communication, organisation and administrative skills • the ability to travel both locally and internationally.
