Job Description Job title: Researcher International Health Policy (PPPs & AIDS) at ITM - Antwerp Location: Department of Public Health, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp Initial length of contract: 18 months, extendable Closing Date for Application: 1 May 2005 Start: Preferably in June 2005 General description of the position The applicant will mainly be working with Wim Van Damme, professor in public health in a research project on the big players in international health policies, with a particular focus on the role of public - private partnerships (PPPs), especially the Global Fund. Our aim is to understand and document the effects of PPPs and other funding initiatives on the health systems of low-income countries, especially on those hardest hit by HIV/AIDS. The recent research has mainly focussed on Human Resources for Health (HRH) as a major bottleneck for scaling up ART in Southern Africa. The position of researcher also entails involvement in a number of other projects, the extent of which will depend on time and project needs. Most current research projects are focussed on Cambodia dealing with ART delivery and HRH as well as with changes and adjustments of health systems in transition and their consequences for the population. Main Activities Follow-up new developments in international health policy with particular focus on the old (WHO, UNAIDS, WB, etc) and new ‘big players’ (Global Fund, PEPFAR, Clinton Foundation, etc.) Follow-up new developments in the field of HIV/AIDS and ART, such as ‘3 by 5’, MAP, TAP, etc. Document how low-income countries cope with all these policies and initiatives Investigate, analyse and follow-up ART related HRH issues in sub-Saharan Africa Undertake field trips related to the described research activities Disseminate research results by preparing manuscripts for scientific journals and briefings for policy makers et al. Organise monthly staff meetings on International Health Policy Other tasks The job may entail participation in teaching activities at ITM and contributions to scientific conferences and workshops as well as involvement in other research projects Skills and competence University degree in a relevant discipline, such as medicine, nursing, economics or social sciences Master’s Diploma, preferably in public health A minimum of two years overseas field experience, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa Fluency in English with good writing skills Good knowledge of French desirable Dutch or Portuguese would be an asset For an application form and additional information please contact Katharina Kober, who is currently filling the position, at kkober@itg.be Applications are to be sent to the same mail address before 1 May 2005.
