Ford Foundation/SAHARA Doctoral Scholarships US$ 44,000 per year - up to 3 year tenure The SAHARA Network seeks to promote outstanding research in the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS in Africa, and to foster a fruitful dialogue between scholars and policymakers in all sectors. The Network is committed to supporting work of academic excellence that helps to promote public discussion on AIDS issues in Africa and the rest of the developing world. The SAHARA Network is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the Ford Foun- dation/SAHARA Doctoral Scholarships of Senior Research Fellows. The SAHARA Network, coordinated by the Human Sciences Research Council, must nominate four candidates for these awards, each valued at US$ 44,000 each year up for a 3-year tenure. The eligibility criteria for nominees are: 1. Must possess at least either a Master's or equivalent degree in any social sciences area or Master's degree in Public Health or its equivalent from a recognized university. 2. Must be accepted into a doctoral program at a recognized Af- rican or overseas university, ideally before appointment. 3. Must have some previous experience or be interested in re- searching in the area of social aspects of HIV/AIDS. Evidence of this must be provided. 4. Must be a citizen of any country in Africa and preferably an indigenous person. 5. Must be younger than 45 years of age at the start of the doc- toral programme. 6. If not already working in the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health programme (SAHA), must be willing to undergo a compe- tency-based assessment to establish suitability for selection into the programme. Research priorities for the SADC region * Investigating the distinct socio-demographic character of SADC that makes it have the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world; * To identify existing policies at regional and national levels that guide research needs in the region; * Identify existing theories on how HIV/AIDS is manifested and distributed and assess their relevance to the SADC region; and finally * Investigate the international and regional best practices that are relevant to managing HIV/AIDS in the SADC region. The four research priorities of the SAHARA (SADC) Network are: * investigating the distinct socio-demographic character of SADC that makes it have the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world; * to identify existing policies at regional and national levels that guide research needs in the region; * identify existing theories on how HIV/AIDS is manifested and distributed and assess their relevance to the SADC region; and * finally investigate the international and regional best prac- tices that are relevant to managing HIV/AIDS in the SADC region. Scholarships will be tenable for up to 3 years. This includes living costs, tuition fees, and costs for training, data collec- tion, as well as subsistence and travel.
