Call for Proposals: Strategic Research on Governance, Equity and
Health for Eastern and Southern Africa
Deadline 13 August, 2004
Website: http://www2.alliance-hpsr.org/
The Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research is issuing a
competitive Call for Proposals (in collaboration with The Inter-
national Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada) to
strengthen health systems, promote civic engagement, and make
research matter. This collaboration aims to support the integra-
tion of political, economic, social and policy analysis into re-
search on public health and health care systems and policies in
Eastern and Southern Africa. Only proposals focusing on this re-
gion will be considered.
The research should provide solid grounds for making informed
and needs-based decisions on the equitable financing and func-
tioning of health systems. Innovative, evidence-based thinking
and explicit attention to governance challenges such as account-
ability, transparency, corruption and civic engagement, are con-
sidered important means to deepen democracy and strengthen
health and social equity. Relevant and scientifically sound re-
search can promote effective citizen engagement and help target
interventions toward helping the marginalized and under-served
populations - in the development of health policy and the deliv-
ery of public services for health.
The present call envisages providing funding for at least 2
strategic research projects with 2 to 3 years duration and a
maximum cost of USD 150,000. This stage (Stage 3) will be open
both to participants in Stages 1 and 2, and to other research
teams. The call for proposals should be filled out by any re-
search team interested in competing for these funds.
Full details and the application form may be obtained from me,
and will shortly be published on our website.
Please draw this Call for Proposals to the attention of any
other researchers you feel may be interested.
