Advanced Learning in International Health Research Ethics
Scholarships/Fellowships available The South African Research Ethics Training Initiative, SARETI, is a joint project by the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the Uni- versity of Pretoria, faculty from Johns Hopkins University, and the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health to offer advanced learning in bioethics and health re- search ethics. The programme is aimed at scientists, health pro- fessionals, members of ethics review committees, public health personnel, social scientists, philosophers, ethicists, health journalists, lawyers, and other professionals whose work impacts on health. SARETI is an African programme in health ethics that offers modular, academic and practical learning. Trainees develop the expertise required to ensure that health research in Africa has the welfare of individuals and of communities as its primary fo- cus. SARETI's educational programmes vary from Masters pro- grammes (MPH, MPhil, and M Soc Sci with majors in health re- search ethics), to 3-6 month Fellowships (mini-sabbaticals) for senior professionals, to a three-week programme aimed at South African Ethics Review Committee members, to one-week intensive short courses. The Masters degrees involve one year of course work. The second year involves the completion of a research pro- ject in the applicant's home country. SARETI announces the availability of scholarships/fellowships that offer full financial support for three Masters' degree stu- dents and for up to six short-term Fellows annually. The Fellow- ships are available to professionals involved in health ethics and health research and who are resident in Africa. SARETI also offers partial financial support for 10 members of South African Ethics Review Committee members to attend the 3-week training programme for Ethics Review Committees (ERCTP). Applications for the 2005 programmes (which start on January 20th 2005) are invited. The closing date for applications is 30th July 2004.
