African Population & Health Research Center Workshop on Proposal Development for Scientific Research Funding in Sub-Saharan Africa Venue: Nairobi, Kenya Dates: 16-20 August 2004 The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) based in Nairobi, Kenya, in collaboration with the University of Southampton are inviting nominations of senior social science or public health researchers to attend a workshop on research proposal development. The main objective of the workshop is to strengthen the capacity of African scholars and institutions in developing good fundable proposals for scientific research. The specific objectives of the workshop are: a) to train African scholars in proposal development for social science research in the field of health or population; b) to inform scholars of the existing research programmes of the major funding organizations and to describe the proposal review processes of these organizations; c) to create opportunity for discussion between researchers from the region, representatives of donor agencies, and facilitators; d) to enable scholars to develop their concept proposals during the workshop and to obtain feedback from donor representatives and facilitators. Eligibility The competition for places to attend the workshop is open to senior African scholars with at least five years experience of conducting research. Only scholars who have participated in a scientific social science research project (either as a principal investigator or a named co-investigator) in the field of health or population will be considered. Nomination Procedures Heads of research in major universities and research institutions are invited to nominate candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria to participate in this workshop. Participants will be selected from those nominated through a rigorous selection process. Places are limited; therefore, not more than one candidate will be selected from an institution to attend. Heads of research should send their nominated candidate’s CV plus a brief statement from the nominee highlighting her/his areas of research interest and a list of recent or current research activities. Selected candidates will be required to produce a short concept paper (2-5 pages) which they will develop during the workshop.
