African Population and Health Research Center Promoting the well-being of Africans through policy-relevant research on population and health. Fellowships on Sexuality and Education in Sub-Saharan Africa The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) based in Nairobi, Kenya is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant research on population and health issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. Through funding from the Ford Foundation’s Education and Sexuality Program, the Center seeks to facilitate development of scientific research on sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa. The program is aimed at strengthening scholarly capacity to investigate the notions and perceptions of sexuality, the process of learning, and transmission of sexuality knowledge across generations in the region. The program is expected to lead to a better understanding of the linkages between socialization, education and sexuality and promote the utilization of credible evidence in addressing various sexual and reproductive health problems affecting sub-Saharan Africa, especially among adolescents and pre-teens. To accomplish these goals, the Center will offer up to four residential sabbatical fellowships to experienced African scholars for periods of up to six months and one post-doctoral fellowship to a recently graduated African scholar for a period of two years. Eligibility Sabbatical Fellowships Candidates for sabbatical fellowships should be experienced African social scientists with doctoral degree, a proven track-record in conducting research on sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa, and based in the region. The sabbatical fellows will provide intellectual leadership in defining the conceptual, contextual and methodological issues in the field of sexuality and to guide the development of scientific research on the interface between education and sexuality. The scholars will take up residential fellowships at APHRC for a period of four to six months when they will be expected to write at least one publishable paper, participate in developing new studies in the field, and participate in an international conference on education and sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa. Post-doctoral Fellowship Candidates for the two-year postdoctoral fellowship must have completed their doctoral studies within the last two years, done a thesis in a related field and planning to develop expertise and research career in the field of education and sexuality. During the tenure of the fellowship, the postdoctoral fellow will be expected to publish from existing data, develop new research initiatives in the field and coordinate an international conference on education and sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa.
