African Partnerships Conference
-------------------------------
24-26 March 2005
Johannesburg, South Africa
An international multi-stakeholder conference involving African
Health Research and Academic Institutions (AHRAI)
As an innovative development from the Annual Research Day of the
Faculty of Health Sciences, the University of the Witwatersrand,
there are plans to host a multi-stakeholder conference in 2005.
The objective of the conference is to highlight ongoing health
sciences research being conducted at WITS and other African uni-
versities and research institutions to local and international
audiences able to participate.
Within the themes of infectious and chronic diseases, health and
health services, emerging health issues, medicine and human ori-
gins, we are consulting a wide range of stakeholders, in order
to identify champions who can put together exciting scientific
programmes in collaboration with international colleagues with a
focus on highlighting recent research from universities and re-
search institutions in Africa.
Contributors to the Conference are encouraged to prepare presen-
tations that are cross-cutting and interdisciplinary as follows:
* basic and biomedical research;
* clinical medicine and health care;
* epidemiology and public health sciences;
* capacity building, operational and development projects.
The African Partnerships Conference proposes to be a platform
for building consensus on substantive regional research agenda
and thrusts after the 2005 conference. This should form the ba-
sis of fostering partnerships for health development between Af-
rican researchers and policy makers in governmental and non-
governmental organisations; facilitate networking amongst Afri-
can researchers and with their colleagues working at G8 institu-
tions in order to stimulate international collaboration and re-
source flows to African institutions.
