Our mission is to help build a new generation of development planners and policy makers for whom a global society free of poverty, preventable disease, and environmental degradation is achievable. Students in the Master of Arts in Sustainable International Development (SID) Program are early to mid-career development professionals who consider the state of world development, probe issues that affect future generations, and broaden skills necessary to plan, negotiate, implement, monitor and evaluate development programs. SID has gained international recognition as an innovative degree in examining models of development for their achievements in reducing poverty and inequality, raising quality of life and conserving the environment. SID seeks fresh thinking about complex relationships, bridging areas of concern reserved traditionally for scientists or social scientists, policy makers, human rights advocates, or development practitioners. All students spend their first year in residence at The Heller School at Brandeis University deepening their understanding of development theory and practice, and improving basic skills in management, economics, statistics, ecology, geography, and spoken and written English. Students are trained in the use of computers for academic and professional work. Depending on their courses, they learn word processing, spreadsheets, statistical packages, graphic presentations, and geographic information systems. The Poverty and Development Scholarship recipient agrees to work for the second year as an intern at a project site related to poverty alleviation and community development.
