Box 549110 sidrecruit@brandeis.edu Waltham, Massachusetts 02454-9110 USA http://heller.brandeis.edu/sid Graduate Scholarship in Poverty Alleviation and Community Development A Combination of Academic Study at Brandeis University and Community Development Fieldwork Application Deadline: December 31, 2003 The Poverty and Development (P&D) Scholarship for the Master of Arts in Sustainable International Development will be awarded to an early to mid-career development planner committed to poverty alleviation and community development within Southern Africa. The competition is open to nationals of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The Scholarship begins in late August 2004. The P&D Scholar will join SID graduate students from over 40 countries for an interdisciplinary study of development and project management emphasizing poverty reduction, gender equality, human rights, and biodiversity conservation. The P&D Scholar will concentrate on theory and analytical skills in the Year-in-Residence at Brandeis University and then spend a second year in a supervised internship or field project. The P&D Scholar will receive full tuition and fee remission for the Year-in-Residence. The scholarship does NOT cover airfare or any living expenses. Nominations are encouraged from international and governmental development institutions and NGOs. Self-nominations are accepted, and women are especially encouraged to apply. Applications (to be submitted by the applicant) should include: · A Letter of Interest in the Southern Africa Poverty & Development Scholarship; · A completed SID Application Form (which can be downloaded from our website or submitted on-line); · A Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume; · A detailed Statement of Purpose describing your career objectives and work experience; · Three original letters of recommendation (at least one professional and one academic) on official letterhead sent directly to the SID Admissions Office from the recommenders. These letters must be accompanied by a Brandeis University Recommendation Form. (Faxed letters are acceptable to begin the review but originals are required before any offer of admission or award can be made.) · Original or certified true copies of transcripts from all university-level studies, sent directly to the SID Admissions Office from each university. (An unofficial transcript of university record is acceptable to begin consideration but the original is required to complete the application.) Transcripts in languages other than English must be accompanied by an official English translation. · An official TOEFL score report is required for international applicants. Our mission is to help build a new generation of development planners and policy makers for whom a global society free of poverty, preventable disease, and environmental degradation is achievable. Students in the Master of Arts in Sustainable International Development (SID) Program are early to mid-career development professionals who consider the state of world development, probe issues that affect future generations, and broaden skills necessary to plan, negotiate, implement, monitor and evaluate development programs. SID has gained international recognition as an innovative degree in examining models of development for their achievements in reducing poverty and inequality, raising quality of life and conserving the environment. SID seeks fresh thinking about complex relationships, bridging areas of concern reserved traditionally for scientists or social scientists, policy makers, human rights advocates, or development practitioners. All students spend their first year in residence at The Heller School at Brandeis University deepening their understanding of development theory and practice, and improving basic skills in management, economics, statistics, ecology, geography, and spoken and written English. Students are trained in the use of computers for academic and professional work. Depending on their courses, they learn word processing, spreadsheets, statistical packages, graphic presentations, and geographic information systems. The Poverty and Development Scholarship recipient agrees to work for the second year as an intern at a project site related to poverty alleviation and community development.
