Research Methodology Training Course in the Field of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria This research training course is designed to prepare researchers and postgraduate students with requisite knowledge for formulating sound projects to meet the requirements of postgraduate training of the University of the Witwatersrand and other universities Through a generous donation from the Belgian Embassy, Professor Stephen Chandiwana, Head, Graduate Studies, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand is delighted to announce a short training course on Research Methodology Training Course in the Field of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria from the 8-19th March 2004 ON OFFER: A selection of one or more of the following topics will be covered in the final programme depending on participants’ needs and interests: · Principles of problem identification and selection of a research topic · Developing research protocols for enrollment into masters and/or PhD training programmes · Steps in proposal development i.e. formulation of objectives, study design, sampling, budgeting etc. · Introduction to Data Management and Statistical Analysis · A review of pertinent research techniques and methodologies · Case studies in implementing research proposals in the field of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria · Reworking research protocols to meet expectations of assessors groups · Funding research for postgraduate training projects · Panel discussion with experienced supervisors and assessors of postgraduate research proposals · Networking with other postgraduate students and researchers in implementation of projects FEES: No charge for eligible postgraduate students and researchers from the SADC region (including from the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS)). Each application should include a clearly articulated motivation that indicates that the applicant would benefit from the training. TEACHING METHODOLOGY: The Research Methodology Training Course (RMTC) is planned for 15 young researchers and postgraduate students interested in the field of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Teaching will be done by experienced local and regional facilitators from the SADC region that will be responsible for the course material. The final programme will be based on the needs of the participants who are expected to take responsibility for their own learning by doing. There will be minimal didactic teaching.
