FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES The School of Public Health is a dynamic, vibrant and developing part of the University with an internationally acknowledged reputation in health policy, gender and health, health and population and health systems research. We teach undergraduates and offer a range of postgraduate programmes including a well-subscribed Masters in Public Health, one of the few MSc Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the region, and have a growing PhD programme. The School has research units in urban and rural locations focusing on the major health care issues facing South Africa and the African continent with significant links to national and international institutions. Two of the research units have Medical Research Council status and the School is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Urban Health. We have a Demographic Surveillance Site which provides a longitudinal data set offering unique analysis and intervention possibilities. The School has a total staff of over 120 people committed to public health and equity. (1) CHIEF SPECIALIST AND/OR HEAD OF SCHOOL - This post may be filled by one person fulfilling both roles or by two separate people, one as the Chief Specialist and one Head of School. These appointments may be at Professorial or Associate Professorial level. The Chief Specialist/Head of School will provide leadership in the School and represent the School within the Faculty, the University and the national and international arena. This individual will provide academic leadership in the training of postgraduate students, oversee the undergraduate training of faculty students, liaise and work with the Gauteng Department of Health. Candidates require ten years of experience in Public Health including leadership and management experience, research experience and output, a track record of developing new initiatives in public health and fostering postgraduate students. A packageof R450,000 - 510,000 (South African Rand) is offered. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE : To be appointed as Head of School the candidate must have a PhD in one of the core disciplines of Public Health (including social science) or a specialist qualification in Public Health. To be appointed as Chief Specialist (a joint appointment with the Gauteng Department of Health) the individual must be registered/eligible with the Health Professionals Council as a Public Health Specialist. (2) EPIDEMIOLOGIST - We are looking for a dynamic person with excellent skills in Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics to lead the Epidemiological research and training undertaken by the School of Public Health. The incumbent will be expected to stimulate epidemiologic research within the School and the Faculty. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: A PhD in an appropriate field or equivalent, with a proven record of ongoing research and publication.Depending on qualifications and skills this appointment can be at the Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professorial level. An attractive package is negotiable depending on the qualification and experience of the candidate.
