TDR Career Development Fellowship on Management of Public Health Training

TDR and the WHO Mediterranean Centre (WMC) for communicable diseases
invite nationals from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region or WHO Af-
rica Region to apply for a 12-24 month career development fellowship
[1] on management of public health training. The fellowship is a
placement at the WHO Mediterranean Centre [2] (Tunis, Tunisia) work-
ing with the professional staff located in the centre.
NOTES:
[1] The above Career Development Fellowship is a time-limited post-
graduate training opportunity funded by TDR. The fellowship will be
in the WHO Mediterranean Centre located in Tunis, Tunisia. The
monthly stipend is set at US$ 1800 per month in addition to other mi-
nor benefits. The duration of the fellowship is initial one-year, re-
newable for a second year subject to mutual agreement.

Summary of the Fellowship Programme and Activities
Under the supervision of director WMC and the focal point for capac-
ity development the fellow will participate in the following activi-
ties:
1. In coordination with technical focal points in WMC, assist the ca-
pacity development focal point in the review of priority training
needs and skill requirements for public health professionals in de-
veloping disease endemic countries; in the assessment of the rele-
vance of existing training materials and resources for these situa-
tions; and in any necessary adaptation.
2. Assist in developing appropriate curricula to address the training
needs of the research community and disease control programmes, in-
cluding identification of learning objectives and developing training
materials.
3. Assist in active follow-up of the projects' implementation, analy-
sis of reports, disseminating of information and promoting utilisa-
tion of the training tools by research and control programmes.
4. Participate in planning and coordination of training activities at
inter-country and country level.
5. Develop computerized database based on the any already available
data. Produce specific outputs from the database (reports, circular
letters, website entries, etc.), as needed.
6. Prepare training portfolio containing summaries of progress and
final reports of the training projects to ensure communicating the
results of the projects to all concerned parties.
7. Support TDR/HQ activities as requested by TDR/HQ including site
visits and preparation of reports for TDR secretariat, Research
Strengthening Group (RSG), Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee
(STAC) and the Joint Coordinating Board (JCB).
Eligibility
Applications are requested from nationals of the WHO Eastern Mediter-
ranean Region or WHO Africa Region working in government ministries,
disease control programmes and academic or research institutions who
have completed a post-graduate degree (Master's or Ph.D.). Preference
will be given to candidates under 35 years old holding an advanced
degree with experience in communicable diseases. Good computer skills
(MS Office) are required. Experience in developing curricula and
training tools, and in organizing and conducting training courses is
advantageous. An excellent working knowledge of English is required,
and working knowledge of French or Arabic is desirable.

The completed application must include all items listed below and be

1. Full name in capital letters with the family name underlined.
2. Date of birth, nationality and sex. Official passport details may
be requested at a later date.
3. Name, address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address of
institution where the applicant is employed. All applicants must have
permanent employment.
4. Educational qualifications, including place of study, date of con-
clusion and grade obtained. Transcripts and photocopies of qualifica-
tions are not required but may be requested later.
5. A brief description (1 page) of the applicant's current post and
of the post held immediately before.
6. A description (2 pages) of the applicant's professional interests
that includes a clear expression on how the proposed fellowship re-
quest will contribute to her/his career development and future goals.
Must be endorsed by home institution director.
7. A list of the applicant's publications, abstracts, presentations
and training experience.
8. A letter of recommendation from two senior scientists/professors
that includes their address, telephone numbers, fax numbers and e-
mail addresses. Please include with the application.
9. An endorsement from the director of the applicant's home institu-
tion testifying to the ability of the applicant to successfully un-
dertake the proposed fellowship and certifying that the applicant, if
awarded TDR support, will be granted a leave of absence and on com-
pleting the training will be assured of a post. The director must
also indicate how the proposed fellowship will strengthen the capa-
bilities of the institution.
Applicants from countries requiring national endorsement should sub-
mit their applications through proper government channels. A copy of
all applications should be sent to the WHO Representative's Office in
their home country for information purposes.

The Fellowship is planned to start October 2003.
