Who we are
The Women’s Dignity Project (WDP) was created to mobilize action for the prevention and management of obstetric fistula within a framework of health and gender equity, and human rights. Fistula is a devastating childbirth injury that happens largely to poor girls and women in rural areas. It is a result of difficult labor, and leaves girls and women leaking urine and/or feces through the vagina. Fistula leads to stigmatization and shame, and many girls and women are divorced or abandoned by family and community members.
Although fistula presents as a medical problem, its causes are social, cultural and economic in nature. Fistula is largely a condition borne of poverty, as reflected by the girls and women who live with it and the socio-economic conditions that shape their lives. They are often under-nourished, lack access to adequate health services, cannot afford for medical care, and are unable to control family assets to pay for treatment.
WDP’s program areas include:
· Participatory research to understand girls’ and women’s vulnerability to fistula
· Capacity building to strengthen organizations to take action on fistula and inequities impacting the poor
· Advocacy and policy analysis to stimulate public debate and action on these fundamental inequities
