First African AIDS Vaccine Programme (AAVP) Forum
First African AIDS Vaccine Programme (AAVP) Forum ------------------------------------------------- 3-4 June, 2002 Cape Town, South Africa The WHO-UNAIDS HIV Vaccine Initiative is organizing the First African AIDS Vaccine Programme (AAVP) Forum which is planned to be held at the Golden Tulip The Lord Charles Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa on 3-4 June 2002. Background The African AIDS Vaccine Programme (AAVP) is a network of scientists, working to promote and facilitate HIV vaccine research and evaluation in Africa, through capacity building and regional and international collaboration. The principal objective of this programme is to ac- tively involve African scientists and communities in all stages of HIV vaccine development and evaluation. The AAVP was initiated in June 2000 when a group of African scien- tists adopted the "Nairobi Declaration: An African Appeal for an HIV/AIDS vaccine", pledging to use their personal and collective com- mitment and expertise in the activities of the programme. AAVP is strongly supported by WHO and UNAIDS. The objectives of the Forum are as follows: * Inform all stakeholders and interested parties about the launch of the AAVP; * Create awareness about the need for and challenges facing the de- velopment of HIV/AIDS vaccines for Africa; * Establish a platform for scientific, political, financial and tech- nical commitment for AAVP; and * Promote regional and international partnerships for the AAVP. At the end of the Forum, the following outcome is expected: * Increased awareness of HIV vaccine research in Africa; * Committed support from stakeholders and interested parties for col- laborative research; * Opportunities for new funding; and * Broader participation of all stakeholders and interested parties in AAVP activities.
