TAC Court victory
The Congress of South African Trade Unions welcomes the
Court judgement in favour of the Treatment Action
Campaign (TAC). It is a victory for all mothers who are HIV
positive, to whom the court has ordered the government to
extend the provision of anti-retroviral drugs to prevent
mother-to-child-transmission of the virus. The government
must now comply with the judgement and make the drugs
available to all those mothers who need them, as quickly as
possible.
While COSATU was not part of, and did not support, the
court action, believing that there was space to reach a
settlement with the government, the federation certainly
supported the demands that informed the action.
COSATU congratulates TAC on its determination to fight for
the rights of people living with HIV/Aids. Parents have now
been given hope that their unborn children can be protected
from the disease. COSATU will work closely with TAC,
other civil society organisations and the government, to
mobilise support for a massive campaign to make people
aware of the extent of the HIV/Aids epidemic, measures that
can be taken to avoid infection and a treatment action plan.
