HEALTH AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAMS

, INTERNATIONAL HEALTH MANAGEMENT COURSE (IHMC), August 6 - September 14, 2001 The goal of this six-week course is to enhance and develop the leadership, management and project planning skills that will allow each participant to work with their community and effectively plan, direct, implement, and evaluate programs and activities. Course Content: The training emphasizes active participation through small group sessions, role plays, discussions, listening exercises and coaching sessions. Each participant must develop and implement a written action project that addresses a pressing health-related problem in his/her country. COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES IN RURAL AREAS COURSE (CHS), September 17-28, 2001 This is a two-week add-on course immediately following the IHMC. ONE MUST COMPLETE THE IHMC IN ORDER TO ATTEND THIS COURSE. This special companion course offers participants diverse experiences in the field of community health. Course Content: The CHS, conducted in the rural mountains of North Carolina, provides practical experiences in rural health management. Experiences may include visiting community health care facilities, working with an administrator in a hospital or health clinic, and discussing teaching skills in a health education setting such as a prenatal clinic. HEALTH LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT COURSE (HLMC), October 22 - November 2, 2001 The goal of this intensive two-week course is to provide each participant with the basic leadership and management skills necessary to plan and implement health and development programs in their countries. This course is open to senior-level health management personnel. Course Content: Each participant will develop an individual or group action project which addresses a particular health care need. He/She learns to use existing physical and human resources in creative ways that maximize project possibilities. The HLMC also serves as special, companion course to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Emory University International Epidemic Intelligence Service Course, offered immediately preceding this course. There is a tuition fee for the courses. Some limited scholarships are available for the IHMC and CHS. There are no scholarships offered for the HLMC.
